JUPITER, Florida — A 15-year-old boy has drowned off a South Florida inlet.

Authorities say Edwin Castañon struggled for more than an hour in the water off the Jupiter Inlet on Friday. The Palm Beach Post (http://tinyurl.com/ooekmsd) reports a retired Jupiter police office jumped into the water and tried to rescue the teen, but could not reach him in time.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue officials say Castañon may have been caught in the current and pulled out into the inlet while swimming at DuBois Park. Authorities say the inlet has recently seen strong, swift moving currents.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
