Enrollment declines 1,500 since spring for St. Louis Public Schools

ST. LOUIS — Enrollment is down for St. Louis Public Schools, and if it doesn't rebound, the district stands to lose millions of dollars in state funding.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1L3xhkU ) reports that enrollment from the spring to this fall dropped about 1,500 students. The biggest reason for the drop is students departing for schools elsewhere in the region. Superintendent Kelvin Adams announced the unexpected decline during a meeting Thursday of the Special Administrative Board.

It isn't clear if the district will consider closing schools, but Adams says six elementary schools have fewer than 200 students and three high schools have fewer than 300.
