ALLENTOWN, Pennsylvania — A man accused of strangling a woman and leaving her body in the bathroom of an eastern Pennsylvania apartment while he partied with others told police that he heard voices telling him to kill, authorities said.
Jesus Dominguez, 33, is charged in Lehigh County in the death of Shirley DiLeo, 60, in Allentown over the Labor Day weekend. DiLeo was found dead Aug. 31 after a man reported a stolen car and said there could be a dead person inside the apartment, authorities said.
The witness said he and others had gone to DiLeo's apartment the night before to smoke crack, and Dominguez told them DiLeo was spending the weekend with family in Bethlehem but wouldn't let anyone go into the bathroom while they were there. Dominguez was arrested Sept. 2 near the stolen car.
Allentown police said during a preliminary hearing Thursday that Dominguez said he smoked crack with the victim and had sex with her but later awoke to find her dead. Detectives said he acknowledged having cleaned the body to remove evidence of their sexual encounter and then left the body in the bathroom.
He also described another person called "Gabe" with them but witnesses said there was no one matching that description there. Police said the defendant also said he was bipolar and schizophrenic and hadn't taken his medication.
Det. Stephen Milkovitz also said Dominguez later told him that he didn't remember harming DiLeo but at one point indicated that he must have done so.
"He indicated, 'There's no way to sugar-coat it; I killed an old lady,'" Milkovitz testified. Dominguez also spoke of hearing voices that told him to kill everyone, he said.
Public Defender Kimberly Makoul declined comment on Dominguez's case Friday but said testimony such as that offered by the detective would generally prompt a look at mental health issues in a case.
Prosecutors said they had not determined whether they would seek the death penalty if Dominguez is convicted of first-degree murder
