MENLO PARK, California — Menlo Park police officers have shot and killed a man who allegedly brandished a gun while they were chasing him for suspected burglary.

The San Jose Mercury News reports (http://bit.ly/11jaBeI ) police shot Jerry Lee Matheny while responding Tuesday to a call of a suspicious person and spotted him stealing a wallet.

Police say the 52-year-old man from Nuevo California ran away when officers tried to stop him with a Taser. They say Matheny pulled a gun and brandished it at the officers who shot him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and his gun and a stolen wallet were recovered.
