CANAJOHARIE, New York — State police say a New York City man is dead and a 19-year-old woman is hospitalized after a two-vehicle accident that shut down both westbound lanes of the Thruway in the Mohawk Valley.

Troopers say 29-year-old Nelson Jiminez of the Bronx was driving a car on Interstate 90 when he apparently stopped in the right westbound lane around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday near Exit 29 at Canajoharie in Montgomery County, 45 miles northwest of Albany.

Troopers say the car was then hit by a tractor-trailer.

Jimenez was pronounced dead at Little Falls Hospital. His passenger, 19-year-old Karinna Nicolakis of the Bronx, is in critical condition at an Albany hospital.

Both westbound lanes between Exit 29 at Canajoharie and Exit 29A at Little Falls were closed for a time after the crash. Both lanes were reopened by 4 a.m. Thursday.
