CERRITOS, California — The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says homicide detectives are investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting in the Southern California suburb of Cerritos.
Details were sketchy but authorities say the male victim, identified as a criminal suspect, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff's officials say the shooting occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Deputies were in the neighborhood to investigate reports of suspicious people knocking on doors.
Lt. Eddie Hernandez tells KCAL-TV that as a deputy approached a man in a car the man gunned the vehicle at him and the deputy opened fire.
The car crashed into a fire hydrant, sending a gusher of water into the air.
