Pilot listed in good condition after crashing small biplane east of Montrose

MONTROSE, Colorado — Authorities say a pilot is recovering after he crashed his small biplane east of Montrose.

The Montrose Daily Press reports (http://goo.gl/QCec8H ) Steve Mathis, the only person in the plane, took off from the regional airport Wednesday morning to meet friends in Elbert, and from there, to head to Kansas for a biplane show. He began experiencing engine trouble near Cerro Summit.

Montrose County Sheriff Rick Dunlap says Mathis "didn't think he had enough power to make it over the summit, so he attempted to turn around and unfortunately, he crashed it."

Two Gunnison County Public Works employees saw the plane hit nose first and took care of Mathis until emergency crews arrived.

Mathis was taken to a nearby hospital in good condition.
