TUCSON, Arizona — Another bighorn sheep has died in the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson.
State wildlife officials say the GPS collar on a ewe sent a mortality signal on Monday.
The carcass was found the following day and Arizona Game and Fish officials say the ewe had injuries consistent with a fall.
The ewe's body was also in poor condition and samples were taken to determine if she was suffering from a disease.
Game and Fish is spearheading a push to rebuild a bighorn sheep herd in the mountains after the animals disappeared from the range in the 1990s.
They say 45 bighorns with GPS collars are known to be alive and as many as 13 lambs have been observed in the mountains.
