MANNS HARBOR, North Carolina — The N.C. Department of Transportation's Ferry Division has adjusted its summer schedule for the Cedar Island-Ocracoke run after studying traffic patterns in Pamlico Sound and hearing from passengers.

A statement from NCDOT says passengers wanted later evening departures from both terminals.

Ferry Division Director Ed Goodwin said the new schedule gives the route greater daytime efficiency, and offers people on the mainland the chance to catch a ferry to Ocracoke after work, which is something he said they have been requesting.

Effective May 19, ferries will depart Cedar Island at 7 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Ferries will leave Ocracoke at 7:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Officials recommend making reservations on all Pamlico Sound routes, especially during the summer.
