Mets pitcher among 2 minor leaguers suspended 50 games each for drugs of abuse

NEW YORK — Mets pitcher Derrick Bernard and free agent Christopher R. Perez have been suspended 50 games each for violating baseball's minor league drug program.

The commissioner's office says both right-handers had a second positive test for a drug of abuse. The penalties were announced Wednesday.

Bernard is on the roster of the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Mets. His punishment will begin when the 62-game suspension he received last August runs out.

Perez's suspension will take effect when he signs with another major league organization.
