CHICAGO — Michigan's Michael Downing scored the go-ahead goal early in the first period and the Wolverines beat Michigan State 4-1 Saturday in the Hockey City Classic.
Michigan goalie Zach Nagelvoort made 31 saves as the Wolverines (16-8-0, 8-2-0) avenged last week's 2-1 loss to the Spartans (10-12-2, 4-4-2-2).
The game, played outdoors at Soldier Field, was delayed 80 minutes due to warm conditions.
Downing scored just 1:43 into the game and Cutler Martin added the game-winner at 13:16 of the second period and Andrew Copp made it 3-0 at 17:47. Justin Selman scored into an empty net in the third.
Matt DeBlouw scored for Michigan State.
Michigan State goalie Jake Hildebrand made 33 saves.
It was the second game ever between the two teams outside the state of Michigan.
