SYRACUSE, New York — A 28-year-old Connecticut man is scheduled to be sentenced for leaving the scene of a fatal accident that killed a bicyclist on a Syracuse-area highway.

Chiragkumar Patel, an Indian national living in Southington, Connecticut, faces one to three years in state prison when he's sentenced Monday in a Syracuse court. Authorities say he'll be deported after serving his sentence because he was in the country on an expired student visa.

Police say Patel was in Syracuse looking at graduate schools when his vehicle hit 48-year-old Michael Mahoney of Liverpool as he rode on Electronics Parkway in the town of Salina (suh-LY'-nuh) early on the morning of April 27.

Mahoney's body wasn't found until hours after the accident. Patel's car was found the next day in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex.
