Columbus acting police chief to serve as interim chief while city conducts nationwide search

COLUMBUS, Mississippi — The acting police chief of the city of Columbus will serve as interim chief while the city council conducts a nationwide search.

WTVA TV reports (http://bit.ly/1O1NiJw) Capt. Fred Shelton received approval from council members during a special called meeting Tuesday morning.

Shelton was named acting chief last week after Mayor Robert Smith announced former chief Tony Carleton was stepping down to accept a job in Alabama.

Shelton has been with the department for 32 years.

City council members say they will accept applications for the position through Dec. 14.

They will appoint a 10-person committee to review the applications.
