AUGUSTA, Maine — A Maine woman has been convicted of taking her own children from their legal guardian and driving them to South Carolina.
BethMarie Retamozzo, of Fairfield, was convicted Wednesday in Kennebec County Superior Court of two counts of criminal restraint by a parent. She faces up to five years in prison at sentencing scheduled for Friday.
Prosecutors say the 36-year-old woman abducted her then 7-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son in Augusta 2013. The children were in the legal custody of their grandmother, Retamozzo's mother, after Retamozzo surrendered custody to enter the military.
Three days after they disappeared, she and the children were found in South Carolina, en route to Florida.
Retamozzo's attorney said there was some confusion on what his client was allowed to do with the children.
