WILMINGTON, North Carolina — The district attorney says no charges will be filed against New Hanover County Sheriff's Office deputies in the death of a former Brunswick County sheriff who died in jail.

District Attorney Ben David made that announcement Friday about the July 12th death of former Sheriff Ron Hewett.

A video camera recorded a fight, showing Hewett wearing boxers and throwing punches at a jail guard, being hit twice with a stun gun and then being found in his cell.

Hewett was sheriff from 1994 to 2008. He served a prison term for obstruction of justice and was in jail again after being charged for having weapons.

A pathologist says his preliminary autopsy showed Hewett had an enlarged heart and that stress and chronic alcohol abuse likely contributed to his death.
