SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vermont — Authorities are investigating a phone scam in which the callers falsely identify themselves as employees of the Chittenden County Sheriff's office.
The Chittenden County sheriff's office and the Vermont State Police says the callers usually ask for a specific person and sometimes say the sheriff's office is making collections for the Internal Revenue Service or for child support. In other instances, callers have said they have "warrants" for child support and many times the caller will become angry and use profanity when questioned about their calls.
Police believe the callers are using a false called ID identifier to mimic the sheriff office's business phone number.
