HARDY, Virginia — Police have charged a Hardy man with involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his 3-year-old son.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says 30-year-old Jeremiah Keith Neiderhiser also is charged with felony child abuse and neglect.

The sheriff's office said Tuesday in a news release that rescue crews responded to a report on Sunday of an unconscious and unresponsive child. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene following attempts to resuscitate him.

An autopsy found that the cause of death was a small-caliber gunshot wound.

Details of the shooting and the boy's name weren't released.

The sheriff's department says Neiderhiser is being held on $250,000 bond at the Western Virginia Regional Jail.

The investigation is continuing.
