PHOENIX — A Maricopa County Sheriff's detention officer has been arrested for allegedly assaulting an in-custody inmate.

Sheriff's officials announced Thursday that 27-year-old Zackary James Anthony has worked as an MCSO detention officer since November 2009.

At the time of the incident, they say Anthony was assigned to the psychiatric unit at the Lower Buckeye Jail where seriously mentally ill inmates are housed while awaiting trial.

Sheriff's officials say an inmate in the psych unit apparently managed to obscure the view of the security camera in his cell on Aug. 8.

After the inmate refused to be handcuffed and removed from his cell, detention officers entered the cell.

MCSO officials say a security camera captured the alleged assault.

The inmate suffered a broken jaw and is being treated at a Phoenix hospital.
