HINTON, West Virginia — An additional $9.6 million is being awarded for improvements to the Bluestone Dam near Hinton.
U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall on Friday announced the funding to install additional rock anchors to strengthen the dam and its flood storage capacity.
Bluestone began operations in 1949, and plans were unveiled about 14 years ago to bring it up to modern engineering standards. The project will strengthen the dam's stability and allow for increased discharge capacity.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the dam has prevented nearly $5 billion in flood damage to those living along the New and Kanawha rivers.
