Jury convicts man of 2nd-degree murder in connection with slaying near Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — A jury has convicted a man of second-degree murder in connection with a slaying near Colorado Springs.

The Gazette reports (http://goo.gl/5i27FK ) Michael Malory was found guilty Wednesday in the death of 37-year-old Daniel Baird, whose body was found May 3, 2014, with two gunshot wounds on the floor of Malory's Security-Widefield home. Malory is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 15.

He was initially acquitted of first-degree murder, but the jury could not decide on lesser charges.

Malory and two other men were arrested on suspicion of plotting to kill Baird. In December, 23-year-old Brian Springsted was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He is serving life in prison without parole.

Malory's son, 25-year-old Nathan Varnadore, pleaded guilty to being an accessory to the crime.
