Indiana unemployment rate drops to 4.4 percent for October, lowest since August 2001


INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana's unemployment rate fell to 4.4 percent in October, giving the state its lowest jobless rate since August 2001.

The state Department of Workforce Development said Friday that Indiana's jobless mark fell by one-tenth of a percentage point in October from September. The national unemployment rate stood at 5 percent for October.

Indiana and Ohio were tied last month for the lowest unemployment rate in the Midwest.

Federal figures show about 144,000 Indiana resident were still looking for work last month.

Indiana's unemployment rate has been below 5 percent since June and has been at its lowest levels since before the national recession started in 2008.

Indiana has added 90,000 jobs since January 2013.
