HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — The Hattiesburg Police Department is working on giving its roster a boost with its latest round of recruits currently training at the Hattiesburg police academy.

Media outlets report that 12 recruits began training Monday at the Hattiesburg Police and Fire Training Academy. The department currently has 95 officers and is hoping to add a few more.

Department spokesman Lt. Jon Traxler says the course is comprehensive and rigorous to ensure the recruits are fully trained to handle the job. Some recruits may not be able to complete the course.

Traxler says the department currently has room for 126 officers. If the department reaches that number, Traxler says, the City Council will give it additional funds to go up to 140.
