RENO, Nevada — A 24-year-old Reno man charged with beheading and dismembering several dogs has pleaded not guilty to seven felony counts of willfully torturing and killing the animals.

Washoe District Judge Elliott Sattler scheduled Jason Brown's trial to begin June 22 after Brown entered the pleas Wednesday and waived his right to a speedy trial.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://tinyurl.com/q4vhsks) that Brown was led into the courtroom in a bullet-proof vest usually reserved for high-profile murder cases.

Police say the killings occurred in at least two Reno motel rooms. They have sparked public outrage, with activists demonstrating outside the downtown courthouse in an appeal for the maximum sentence possible.

If convicted of all counts, Brown could face more than 25 years in prison.
