ROCHESTER, New York — Three Rochester residents are behind bars after a high-speed chase that caused several crashes and injured a New York state trooper.

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports (http://on.rocne.ws/1Lv5jNP ) the chase began Saturday afternoon after employees at a Wal-Mart called 911 to report three people trying to leave the store with unpaid merchandise.

The suspects fled and during the chase their car hit one vehicle in Canandaigua and a state police vehicle on the Thruway, causing it to collide with a Monroe County Sheriff's Office vehicle.

The trooper sustained a minor burn on his leg and complained of back pain. No other injuries were reported.

Twenty-six-year-old Ella Cotton, 23-year-old Darrel Hughes and 22-year-old William Johnson are being held at Ontario County Jail. It could not immediately be determined if they have attorneys.
