MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, South Carolina — Members of the South Carolina Air National Guard are flying in a training exercise over Greenwood, McCormick and Newberry counties.
The F-16 jets with the 169th Fighter Wing from McEntire Joint National Guard Base may be seen Wednesday escorting a single-engine plane from the South Carolina Civil Air Patrol.
Guard spokesman Senior Master Sgt. Ed Snyder says the exercise is running between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Snyder says the exercise has been coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration and shouldn't cause concern.
Snyder says the pilots and crew must routinely conduct such exercises to practice responding to potential airborne threats over the U.S. The unit has been conducting such training exercises as part of the nation's North American Aerospace Defense Command missions since the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
