AIKEN, South Carolina — Authorities say a 74-year-old Aiken County man died from neglect and starvation after his caretakers didn't get him proper treatment for pneumonia.

Deputies said 56-year-old Dale Sharkey and his 27-year-old daughter Danielle Sharkey have been charged with abuse or neglect resulting in death of a vulnerable adult.

Investigators say paramedics were called to a convenience store Sunday to pick up George Gibson, who died a short time later.

Coroner Tim Carlton said in a news release that Gibson died from untreated pneumonia and severe bed sores. He called it one of the worst cases he has dealt with in 10 years as Aiken County coroner.

Deputies say the home where Gibson was staying was full of trash and animal and human waste.

It wasn't known if the Sharkeys had lawyers.
