2 overnight shootings in downtown Providence leave 1 man dead, another in critical condition

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — Police have identified the victim of an early morning shooting in downtown Providence.

The Providence Journal reports that 27-year-old Joao Dos Santos of Pawtucket was shot and killed in a car chase about 1 a.m. Monday near the State House and Roger Williams National Memorial Park.

Police responding to calls of gunfire and a vehicle pursuit came across a car accident and found Dos Santos lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. Investigators believe he was one of the drivers in the car chase.

No arrests have been reported.

The incident occurred minutes after a 23-year-old man was shot and rushed to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition.

Police say the incidents do not appear connected, but both incidents might be gang-related.
