Rev. E. Richard Lane
The Rev. Dr. E. Richard Lane, 84, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at his residence in Franklin.
He was born April 28, 1930, in Canton, Ohio, to Frank Cecil and Wanna (Queen) Lane. He married Wanda Marilyn Payne on July 28, 1951. She survives in Franklin.
Rev. Lane is also survived by one daughter, Rexene Lane of Franklin; grandchildren, Holly Marie, Deidra Gail, Danielle Brooke and Neal Alexander Lane; great-grandchildren, Ashton, Zaden, Wesley, Isabella, Kyla, Harmony and Drew; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in passing by his parents; a son, Richard Steven Lane; brothers, Cecil “Bud” Lane and the Rev. Raymond Lane Sr.; and a sister, Helen Louise (Lane) Shute.
He was a 1948 graduate of Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio. He served proudly in the U.S. Army as an MP in Frankfort, Germany, during the Korean War.
He graduated from seminary at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, and received his master’s degree and honorary doctorate degree from Indiana Baptist College.
Rev. Lane began his ministry at Massillon (Ohio) Baptist Temple as the music and youth director for 10 years. He then served as pastor at First Baptist Church in Ashland, Ohio, for nine years. In 1974, Rev. Lane became the pastor at First Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Franklin, serving for 22 years. He then served in New Castle, assisting with music, visitation and pastoral care. For 25 years, Rev. Lane taught at Indiana Baptist College. He later served as a representative of the college, speaking to churches and young adults.
He enjoyed music and played several different instruments. He enjoyed an occasional golf game. He preached around the country, holding revival meetings. He enjoyed going on mission trips and preached and sang in the Holy Land, Mexico, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Formosa. He celebrated with his wife their 50th wedding anniversary in Western Europe.
A celebration of Rev. Lane’s life will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St., (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. The Rev. Frank Wood and the Rev. Allen Pierce will officiate. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison.
