George E. Hayes
George E. Hayes, 94, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at the Franklin United Methodist Community, where he resided.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin.
He was born in New Goshen on Dec. 6, 1919, the son of George and Frances (Martin) Hayes.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Maxine (Stafford) Hayes; son, Stephen (Phyllis) Hayes of Bethesda, Maryland; daughter, Linda (Steve) Vertrees of Franklin; granddaughter, Kristy (Ken) Boone; great-grandsons, Ty and Trent Boone of Greenwood; and a sister, Gladys Hale of Carlisle.
He was a graduate of Fayette Township High School and received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in education from Indiana State University.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a naval officer in Hawaii.
Mr. Hayes spent 40 years in the field of education (five years teaching, 10 years as a principal and 25 years as a superintendent). He served in Vigo, Knox and Fountain county school systems and retired from Decatur County School Corp.
He was a past member of the Gideons International, Kiwanis, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Indiana Pacing and Trotting Association, and Board of Directors of Vincennes University. George was one of the founders of the Decatur County Scholarship Foundation and a member of the Memorial Hospital Foundation of Decatur County.
After his retirement, George and Maxine traveled to several foreign countries. His hobbies included many outdoor activities as well as raising harness horses.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wright Chapel of Franklin United Methodist Community, 1070 W. Jefferson St. in Franklin. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Carlisle.
Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin is assisting with arrangements.
