Robert D. ‘Bob’ Woods

Robert D. “Bob” Woods, 83, passed away Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at Franciscan St. Francis Health-Indianapolis. He was a resident of Martinsville.

Bob was born Dec. 15, 1930, in Morgan County to the late William P. and Murphy Della (Long) Woods. He was a 1948 graduate of Morgantown High School and attended Indiana, Indiana State and Colorado State universities.

He enlisted in the Air National Guard in 1950 and was called to active duty during the Korean conflict and the Berlin crisis. Prior to moving to his last position at state headquarters, he was assigned to the Air Guard’s Air-to-Ground Gunnery Range at Camp Atterbury, where he was instrumental in the design, upgrade and relocation of the range facilities.

Bob retired in 1987 as the personnel management officer of the state headquarters of the Indiana Air National Guard at Stout Field in Indianapolis. He retired with the rank of chief master sergeant.

After retirement, he enjoyed traveling.

Bob is survived by two children, James M. “Jamie” (Shelly) Woods of Martinsville and Roberta (Ted) Saras of Chicago; daughter-in-law, Teresa Woods of Martinsville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sisters, Nila Jo Lasiter of Trafalgar and Mildred Blackburn of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mike Woods; and siblings, Elizabeth Platt and Bill Woods.

Bob was a member of Martinsville American Legion Post 230 and was a former member of First Christian Church of Morgantown.

Martinsville American Legion Chaplain Philip Deckard will conduct a funeral service at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home, Cremation and Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St., Morgantown. Friends may call from 2:30 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Old South Park Cemetery in Martinsville, with military honors presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars honor guards.
