Dorothy Jean Melloan
Dorothy Jean Melloan, 92, of Beech Grove, died at 1:07 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Franciscan St. Francis Health-Indianapolis.
She was born Sept. 9, 1921, in Shelby County to the late Edgar Eugene and Gladys (Boner) Thompson.
She married Charles Robert Melloan on June 22, 1950; and he preceded her in death in 2002.
For the past year, Dorothy resided at Beech Grove Meadows, where she enjoyed new friends and the activities offered at the assisted living facility. In keeping with her resilient spirit, she adjusted to this major change by “blooming where she was planted,” serving as a role model for her family. She especially appreciated the director, Becky Chambers, and the care she received from the staff.
She was a graduate of Whiteland High School, where she was a yell leader. She graduated from the House of James Beauty College. She was self-employed as a hairdresser and had a beauty shop, Styles by Dorothy, in her home for over 35 years.
Dorothy was an active member of Beech Grove United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and worked on The Circuit Rider, a monthly newsletter. She was a sports fan and never missed cheering for the Hoosiers during an IU basketball game.
As the matriarch of the family, she was the glue that held everyone together as she relayed news during her Saturday morning phone calls with many family members. She had a wonderful work ethic and was very generous and disciplined, and she encouraged these traits in others.
She is survived by one son, William “Bill” Shirley (Lyn) of Kokomo; two daughters, Olivia Boles of Nineveh and Debbie Melloan of Bloomington; five grandsons, Matthew Milam (Colleen), Todd Shirley, Andy Milam (Twyla), Alejandro Melloan Ruiz (Karen) and Nicholas Melloan-Ruiz; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Jackie Umbarger of Greenwood; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Norval “Ike” Sharp; her husband; one sister, Bonnie Miles; and one great–grandson.
A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shirley Brothers Mortuary, Thompson Road Chapel, 3333 E. Thompson Road, Indianapolis. Pastor Michael Hendrix will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes & Crematory of Kokomo assisted the family with arrangements.
