James Dwight Howard
James Dwight Howard, 94, of Greenwood, died Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Greenwood Village Pavilion.
Born Dec. 29, 1919, in Brown County, he was the son of the late James E. and Hazel (Shafer) Howard. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1938 and was a World War II veteran.
He retired from Arvin Industries in Greenwood in 1983 after 43 years of service.
On Dec. 11, 1940, he married Pauline L. Fewell.
He and Pauline were the parents of Wilma (Jim) McDermott of Greenwood, Adlin Sullivan of Morgantown, who died on Oct. 13, 2012, and Dwight (Laurissa) Howard of Greenwood. They enjoyed six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
During his lifetime, Dwight was always active in the Greenwood community. He attended the First Baptist Church of Greenwood and was a 50-year gold member of the Greenwood Masonic Lodge. Most recently, he served on the Greenwood Cemetery board.
He served on the Greenwood and Clark-Pleasant school boards and was instrumental in the building of Central Nine Career Center.
In 1970 he was awarded the “Man of the Year” by the Greenwood Jaycees.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; his parents; four brothers, Paul, Herald, Donald Ray and Kenneth D. Howard; two sisters, Irene and Velma Jean Howard; and his stepmother, Mary (Miles) Howard.
A service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. James will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery.
