John Robert Irons, 73, of Greenwood, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, unexpectedly while on vacation in New Mexico.

Born March 19, 1941, in Sullivan to John A. and Jessie Georgia Irons, he was a 1963 graduate of Indiana State University.

John taught math and P.E. and served as athletics director at Greenwood High School. He then served as vice principal at Greenwood Middle School before retiring in 2003. Throughout his 37-year tenure in the Greenwood school system, he coached basketball, track, cross country and football. Later, he served as principal at Greenwood Christian School.

An active longtime member of Greenwood Christian Church, he has served as deacon, elder, chairman of the board of elders and on numerous other committees over the years.

His hobbies included traveling and gardening.

John’s true legacy was his love for his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his children, Curt (Theresa) Irons and John (Paula) Irons, both of Greenwood, Susan (Dale) Prentice of Tipp City, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Tyler, John, Alexandra, Seth, Sam, Luke, Adam and Jonah; brother, Dr. Mike (Patricia) Irons of Columbus; and eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris J. Irons, on Jan. 22, 2011.

Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today at G. H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home at The Gardens at Olive Branch, 1605 South State Road 135. The Rev. Shan Rutherford will conduct a service at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Christian Church. Burial will be at The Gardens at Olive Branch Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Greenwood High School Memorial Scholarship Fund, Greenwood Christian Church or American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.
