Howard E. Waltman, 87, passed peacefully Friday morning, April 25, 2014, at the Franklin United Methodist Community. He was a resident of Franklin and a former longtime resident of Morgantown.
Howard was born in Brown County on May 26, 1926, to his parents, the late Elza E. and Helen Blanche (Percifield) Waltman. He was a 1944 graduate of the Helmsburg High School in Brown County and went on to serve during World War II as a seaman first class with the United States Navy. He married Phyllis L. Skinner on May 20, 1949, at the Morgantown United Methodist Church. She survives after 64 loving years of marriage.
Howard retired in 1984 as a test man for Indiana Bell. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Las Vegas to be closer to their grandchildren. While in Las Vegas, Howard worked as a district director in the Circulation Department for the Las Vegas Sun Newspaper for six years.
He was a 54-year member of the Morgantown United Methodist Church and a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club of America since 1956. Howard was a former member of the Morgantown Volunteer Fire Department, Jackson Township Trustees Advisory Board and the Franklin American Legion Post No. 205. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and was a fan of NASCAR and Indy Racing League. Howard enjoyed traveling, working in his garden, and cutting and splitting firewood with his friends.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis L. Waltman of Franklin; children, Elizabeth “Libby” (Jeff) Carlson of Las Vegas and Jay H. (Staci) Waltman of Alert Lea, Minnesota; grandchildren, Josh (April) Carlson and Jason Carlson both of Las Vegas, Jane Carlson of Los Angeles, Anna Waltman, Kacey Waltman and Jack Waltman, all of Minnesota; and great-grandchild, Cruz Carlson of Las Vegas. Howard is also survived by his siblings, Marjorie Young of Columbus and Helen Peasley of California City, California.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, William S. Waltman, and a brother, Myron Waltman.
The Rev. Jill Howard will conduct a Memorial Service at noon Friday at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St., Morgantown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
A private family graveside service with military honors will be conducted prior to the service on Friday at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
