Mary Jane Utterback

Mary Jane Utterback, 75, of Greenwood, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014.

She was born Dec. 27, 1938, in Indianapolis to the late Maurice “Wes” and Mary Wheeler Utterback.

Her survivors include sisters, Martha Hinkle and Gayle (Mark) Allard, both of Bargersville; nieces, Erin (David) Records of Greenwood and Elizabeth Allard of Franklin; nephews, Andrew (Kim) Allard of Bloomington, David (Tammy) Allard of Erie, Pa., and Eric (Pam) Hinkle of Indianapolis; and great-nieces, Lydia and Madeleine Allard, Maura Jane Records, Aletha and Ruth Hinkle, Lindsay and Marissa Allard.

She dedicated her life to her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as her students in the classroom.

Jane was a 1957 Union Township High School graduate and a 1961 Ball State Teachers College graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She earned her Master of Science degree in education from Indiana University in 1970. Her teaching career of nearly 40 years included San Bernardino, Calif., and Whiteland community schools. She retired in 1999 from Perry Meridian Middle School in Perry Township.

She was a member of Providence Christian Church, Johnson County Retired Teachers Association and Union Township High School Alumni Association, for which she was a member of the scholarship committee.

Jane was most generous in supporting numerous organizations and faithfully volunteered and supported the work of the Interchurch Food Pantry of Johnson County.

She was known for her love of current events and sports, specifically IU basketball and football, and the Indiana Pacers; and she was a longtime season ticket holder for the Indianapolis Colts.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 7602 Madison Ave., Indianapolis. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
