Robert Lee Bland
Robert Lee Bland, 80, passed away Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, in Franklin. He was a resident of Franklin.
Robert was born Jan. 28, 1934, in White Mills, Ky., to Robert P. and Mary L. (Williams) Bland.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, retiring in 1972 as a master sergeant after 20 years of service.
He married Mildred L. Sharp on Jan. 21, 1956, in White Mills, Ky.; they were married for 58 years.
After retiring from the Air Force, Robert was employed with U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier for 10 years then was on the production line at Kawneer for eight years, retiring for a second time in 1996.
During retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He also owned Bob Bland’s Repair and Remodeling business, doing home repair and construction.
He enjoyed turkey hunting, fishing and traveling to Daytona Beach. In later years he loved going to Florida with his grandson Greg and family, staying at the same motel every year and spending time with the friends they had met over those years for fun in the sun. He was a big University of Kentucky basketball fan.
Robert was an ordained deacon since 1968, most recently at Temple Baptist Church in Franklin, where he was a member.
He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. Robert was a very caring and generous man, always helping others, and never met a stranger.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Bland of Franklin; three daughters, Jacqueline Burge and Lucinda Rodriguez, both of Franklin, and Vickie (Bobby Joe) Ferguson of Spencer; two sisters, Joyce Faye (Truman) Edlin of Kentucky and Martha Alman of North Carolina; two brothers, Bill Bland and Tony (Carol) Bland, both of Kentucky; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; second mom, Louise Myers; and 11 brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 U.S. 31 North. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
