Lee R. ‘Roy’ Pearson

Lee R. “Roy” Pearson, 90, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at his home in Greenwood.

He was born in Indianapolis on Aug. 26, 1923, the son of Jesse Harlan Pearson and Bertha Duckworth Pearson.

His mother died when Roy was 3 years old. When he was 7, his father married Lorinda Harrell Pearson, whom Roy referred to as “my other mother.”

Roy was a 1941 graduate of Ben Davis High School, where he excelled in basketball and track, winning the state track meet in the 440-yard dash in 1940 and 1941.

He entered Purdue University in the fall of 1941 and played freshman basketball for coach Ward “Piggy” Lambert. He also set a track record in the 440-yard dash at Purdue that held for many years. His education at Purdue was interrupted by World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces.

He received his commission at Yale University as a lieutenant and joined the 411th Air Service Squadron. He was sent to India, where he supervised the assembly of P-51 airplanes used in combat.

Upon his return home, he married Martha Metcalf Pearson and returned to Purdue University, where he earned his mechanical engineering degree in 1950.

Returning to Indianapolis, Roy became a production engineer at Bryant Heating Co., which became a division of United Technologies Corp. He remained at UTC for 37 years.

Roy was a member of SS. Francis and Clare Catholic Church.

Roy is survived by his wife of 66 years, Martha; a daughter, Ann Marie (Dave) Emery; a son, Ted Brooks (Diane) Pearson; grandchildren, Melissa (Jarrad) Ade, Erin (Nathan) Hurst, Kristen (Evan) Miller, Emily (Justin) Matteson, Nicholas (Kathleen) Pearson and Christopher Pearson; great-grandchildren, Ethan Ade, Eli Ade, Jacob Miller and Dominic Matteson; nephews, Joe Pearson and Paul Toler; cousin, Thomas (Mary) Smith; and special friends, Betty and Larry Faulk and Stan Brown. He also is survived by a loving extended family, the Donald Block family.

He was predeceased by his father; mother; other mother; brothers, Sherald and Jesse Jr.; sister, Marie (Bill) Bowers; and niece, Jeanne Toler.

Roy’s family would like to express special appreciation to Dr. Linda Harrell at Indiana University Hospice and Susie Bruner for their excellent care.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St., where a rosary service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at SS. Francis and Clare Roman Catholic Church, 5901 Olive Branch Road, Greenwood. Father Vincent Lampert will officiate. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
