Lowell Dewayne Burks

Lowell Dewayne Burks, 75, passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a resident of New Whiteland.

He was born Feb. 25, 1938, in Tompkinsville, Ky., to Earlie D. and Lillie (Turner) Burks.

Lowell was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was employed at Kawneer in Franklin as a maintenance supervisor for more than 20 years.

He married Shirley Carter on Nov. 19, 1957; they were married for 56 years.

Lowell enjoyed woodworking and electronics. He owned Burks T.V. Service in New Whiteland.

He was a softball player and coach in Franklin and Whiteland. He was a big fan of the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Pacers.

Lowell was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Burks of New Whiteland; two daughters, Carla (Don) Phelps and Pam Farr, both of New Whiteland; a sister, Dorcia Emberton of Kentucky; four grandchildren, Kim Phelps, Kevin Phelps, Matt (Leni) Farr and Jena Farr; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Powers, Aubrey Phelps and Ariane Santana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Deborah Burks; and three brothers, Ernest, Herbert and Delbert Burks.

A funeral service will be conducted at noon Monday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 U.S. 31 North. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
