Brenda Ann Briggs

Mrs. Brenda Ann (Hyatt) Briggs, 65, of Vevay, died at 4:52 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

Brenda entered this life on July 4, 1948, in Franklin. She was the loving daughter of the late Allen Wesley and Beulah Ann (Black) Hyatt. She was raised in Whiteland, where she was a 1966 graduate of Whiteland Community High School. Brenda earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Ball State University in 1970 and her master’s degree from Murray State University in 1975.

Brenda was united in marriage on June 7, 1975, in Greenwood, to Kendrick Fay Briggs Jr., and to this union arrived a son to bless their home. Brenda and Kendrick shared nearly 39 years of marriage together until her death. Brenda was a retired home economics teacher for the Switzerland County School Corp., retiring in 2007, after 37 years of service.

She was a senior class sponsor for 12 years, where she organized senior class trips to Florida. She was a cheerleading sponsor for 10 years and Future Homemakers of America sponsor. Brenda was an honorary member of the Switzerland County FFA Association. She participated in bringing Farm Bureau Ag in the classroom.

Brenda resided in the Switzerland County Community since 1970, where she was not only a teacher but a friend to many in her community.

She was a member of the Honey Creek United Methodist Church in Greenwood, Vevay Athletic Club and Delta Kappa Gama Sorority. She was Mrs. Switzerland County in 2005 at the Switzerland County 4-H Fair. She was a Switzerland County 4-H Fair Board member for more than 20 years.

Brenda was in charge of hospitality for many events for Switzerland County Schools. She started adult sewing classes at Switzerland County High School. She enjoyed sewing, collecting Santa Claus figurines, making crafts, canning and collecting Longaberger baskets.

Brenda was known for being very organized in her home and in the classroom. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher and friend.

Brenda will be missed by her husband of 39 years, Kendrick Fay Briggs Jr. of Vevay; her son, Bradley Allen Briggs and his wife, Amanda, of Dupont; her grandson, Michael Allen Briggs of Dupont; her brother, John A. Hyatt and his wife, Donna, of Franklin; and her mother-in-law, Joy Briggs of Vevay.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Allen Wesley and Beulah Ann (Black) Hyatt; her father-in-law, Kendrick Fay Briggs Sr.; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Charlene McMakin Johnson.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Mike Jones at 1 p.m. Sunday at Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry St., Vevay. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be at

Vevay Cemetery.
