After graduating from Helmsburg High School in 1944, she went to work at RCA in Indianapolis and from there to Camp Atterbury. In 1959, Alice attended Franklin College and transferred to Indiana University in Bloomington, where she received her undergraduate degree in education. She later received her master’s in education from Indiana University. Alice began her teaching career in 1965 at the Morgantown High School and then retired in 1986 from the Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson United School Corp. in Trafalgar.

During her teaching career, she taught middle school and freshman English and special reading. Alice did research and wrote many articles for families that were published in the 1999 “Bartholomew County, Indiana Family Histories, Churches & School Books,” compiled by the Brown County Genealogical Society.

Alice married Ocle Dale Smith on Nov. 9, 1946, in Trevlac. He preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1969, after 23 devoted years of marriage.

Together they raised four children, Brenda (Eugene) Hill of Martinsville, Cynthia (Stephen) Pottorff and Kevin (Yvonne) Smith, both of Morgantown, and Tim (LuAnn) Smith of Taylors, S.C. Other survivors include her siblings, Wilma Johns and Carol (Richard) McCracken, both of California, and Virginia Moore of Trafalgar; six grandchildren, Jason (Marsha) Hill and Jeremy (Jennifer) Hill, both of Martinsville, Elizabeth Davis of Camby, Robert “Bobby” Dale (Tiffany) Betts of Franklin, Julie (James) Arnold of Greer, S.C., and Sam Smith of Taylors, S.C.; and 11 great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Kaitlyn, Addisyn, Alexander, Aiden, Alyssa, Abigail, Ashton, Dawson, Carleigh and Christopher.

Alice later married Warren Dale Parmerlee on April 21, 1990, in Morgantown. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 2005. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Fleener; and an infant son, Nelson Smith.

Alice attended the Bear Creek Christian Church in Brown County in her youth, where she and her sisters sang and Alice played the piano. She and her sisters also sang at other churches in the area. Alice was a 66-year member of Morgantown First Christian Church, where she volunteered with vacation Bible school, was a Sunday school teacher and participated in the women’s groups. Alice enjoyed hosting Sunday school classes, fellowships and family reunions.

She also enjoyed working outdoors in the yard and woods, oil painting and wintering in Florida. She always had an encouraging word for everyone she met and loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Burt Brock will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church of Morgantown, 2717 S. Morgantown Road. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
