Ruth S. Johnson
Ruth S. Johnson, 99, of Greenwood, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013.
She was born on July 4, 1914, in Washington, Ind., a daughter of Aden and Nellie Singleton.
She was married to Bert Johnson. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Survivors include a son, David (Lisa) Johnson; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth (Darren) Wittkamper and Alex Johnson.
Ruth graduated from Indiana State University with her Bachelor of Education degree in 1941 and later graduated from Indiana University with a Master of Education degree in 1952.
Ruth was a teacher for more than 40 years, and much of her career was spent at IPS School No. 84.
She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, and since moving to Greenwood 20 years ago had attended Garfield Park United Church of Christ.
Ruth was a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and loved teaching American history to her students. She loved to travel and often attended elder hostels in various places to continue learning.
After moving to Greenwood, she continued her love for teaching through OASIS and being involved in the mentoring program at Greenwood Community High School.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St., Greenwood, with visitation from 11 a.m. until service Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice.
