Joseph E. ‘Joe’ Dougherty
Joseph E. “Joe” Dougherty, 82, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at his home in Whiteland. He was a lifelong resident of Johnson County.
Joe was born Oct. 26, 1931, in Johnson County to John E. and Josephine E. (Wright) Dougherty.
He graduated from Whiteland High School.
Joe was a self-employed farmer in Johnson County in Clark Township for all of his adult life.
He married N. Amaryllis Watts on Jan. 21, 1951, at Rocklane Christian Church near Greenwood. They were married for 62 years.
He joined Rocklane Christian Church when he was 10 years old and was a member for 72 years.
Joe enjoyed farming and raising livestock. He grew produce and sold it at the Greenwood Farmers Market for 25 years.
He also enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
He created a beautiful setting on his farm that many enjoyed.
He is survived by his wife, Amaryllis Dougherty of Whiteland; four children, Ryllis (Tim) Blackwell of Trafalgar, Jerrel (Julia) Dougherty of Whiteland, Kathy (Harold) Floyd of Nineveh and Joy (Mark) McClain of Greenwood; three sisters, Virginia Vaught of Whiteland, Donna Marie (Tony) Laker of Indianapolis and Mary Ellen (Bob) Smith of Greenwood; six brothers, Charles (Mary) Dougherty of Shelbyville, Phillip (Loretta) Dougherty and Steve (Elaine) Dougherty, both of Greenwood, Donald (Jean) Dougherty of Ohio, James Dougherty of Morristown and William (Tracy) Dougherty of Whiteland; daughter-in-law, Renee Dougherty of Greenwood; 17 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ivan Daniel Dougherty; and a sister, Marilyn Willis.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rocklane Christian Church, 4430 Rocklane Road, Greenwood. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
