Melvin L. Burkhart
Melvin L. Burkhart, 85, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, in Greenwood. He was a resident of Greenwood.
Melvin was born Aug. 9, 1928, in Indianapolis to Thomas C. and Clara Marie (Emmelman) Burkhart.
He married Betty Smithey July 9, 1950, in Greenwood. They were married for 63 years. She preceded him in death Nov. 11.
Melvin was employed with Western Electric as a laser beam operator, retiring in 1985 after 30 years of service.
He enjoyed fishing, yard work, tinkering around the house and garage and working on lawnmowers and cars. He loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include two children, Karen Burkhart of Greenwood and Rita (Jerry) Harting of Franklin; a brother, Forrest G. (Anita) Burkhart of Arizona; and his dog, Nikki.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Thomas O., Aaron A. and Kenneth Allen Burkhart; and a sister, Juanita Burkhart.
The Rev. Brad Miller will conduct a funeral service at 1 p.m. Friday at Honey Creek United Methodist Church, 2722 S. Honey Creek Road, Greenwood. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 U.S. 31 North. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
Memorial contributions may be made to Johnson County Make a Wish Foundation for Children.
