Raymond F. “Ray” Spencer, 78, of Linton, passed away at 9:58 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital.

He was born in Patriot on Dec. 22, 1934, the son of Raymond E. and Eloise V. (Spry) Spencer.

Ray was a 1953 graduate of Lawrenceburg High School and recently attended his 60th reunion. He graduated from Franklin College in 1957 and later received a master’s degree in special education and another in administration, both from Indiana University.

Ray taught fourth grade, fifth grade and special education in Franklin. He then worked at Oaktown Elementary School as a principal for one year before taking the job at Linton-Stockton Elementary School in 1970, serving as principal until his retirement in 1991. He worked at Harrah Realty in Linton following his retirement.

Ray was honored to be recognized by the Franklin College Alumni Council with an Alumni Citation for Life Achievement in 2005 and as the Linton Civitan Citizen of the Year in 2006.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janice (Johnson) Spencer of Linton; two sons, Brad Spencer of Bloomington and Paul (Michele) Spencer of Indianapolis; a brother, Lloyd (Mary Sue) Spencer of Columbus; a sister, Joyce (Max) Gill of Baton Rouge, La.; four granddaughters, Mariel, Sarah, Sydney and Catherine; and a grandson, Grant.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Ruth Ann Nadel.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Saron Church, 440 First St. NE in Linton, with the Rev. Mike Roth officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.
