Barbara Jean Lawyer of Bloomington passed away at her residence Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at the age of 83.
She was born into the home of Myron and Geneva (Franklin) Howard in Ellettsville on Sept. 19, 1930. Barbara graduated from Ellettsville High School and went on to graduate from Indiana University in 1952 with a degree in journalism. She worked at WTTV, where she wrote copy for the station. Barbara was a member of the Ernie Pyle School of Journalism and an avid IU basketball and football supporter. She met Harrison Lawyer, and they were married.
After moving to Columbus, she joined the Columbus Arts Council, the Distinguished Visitor Series, the Rose Society and the Garden and Research Club where she devoted many hours of her time.
Barbara was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Columbus. When Harrison passed in 1993, she then moved to Bloomington. She loved to cook and garden and was exceptionally creative and artistic.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Jayne Lawyer and Jennifer Sunnekalb (Andrew), both of Bloomington, and Marjorie Lawyer-Smith (Doug) of Greenwood; grandchildren, Nathan and Christopher Sunnekalb of West Lafayette and Eli and Tess Lawyer-Smith of Greenwood; and a sister, Marcella “Sami” Samora of Florida.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chandler Funeral Home, with Rev. Maurice Wright officiating. Burial is to follow at Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
