John O. Lewis, 79, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, after complications of a prolonged illness. He was a resident of Franklin and a former resident of Indianapolis.
John had a 50-year-plus career in route sales, working for Colonial Baking Co., selling Old Milwaukee and Stroh’s brand beers for local wholesaler Todd and Justak, and finishing his career at Borden’s Milk and Ice Cream Co.
He was a 40-year member of Teamsters Local 135.
He was an avid lover of dogs and was a student of U.S. history and political science.
John was passionate about his faith and personal relationship with the Lord.
Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Kay (Edward) Dale; his son, Michael Wayne (Susan) Lewis; five grandchildren, Matt Lewis, Karrie Lewis, Adam Lewis, Ellen Lawless and Ricky Pearson; six great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph B. and Ellen (Fisher) Lewis; his wife, Joyce Jane ( Marcum) Lewis; and sister and brother-in-law, Stella Mae and Ralph Shireman.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 U.S. 31 North. Visitation was Thursday. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests in honor of John to “pay it forward” by making a contribution to a charity of your choice.
