Phyllis J. (Swank) Northern, 75, of Greenwood, passed away at 2:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation in Greenwood.

She was born Tuesday, July 26, 1938, in Middletown, Ohio, to the late Homer Charles Swank and Florence Louise (Hoopes) Swank, who survives.

Phyllis was a 1956 graduate of Lemon Monroe High School in Middletown, Ohio, and graduated in 1959 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a degree in nursing. She was a pediatric nurse for Riley Hospital for Children and the Indiana University Medical Center and was a school nurse at Johnson County Special Services and at Center Grove High School.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Martinsville and was an active member of the Red Hat Society. When her sons were in school, she was an active parent in the Center Grove Parent Teachers Association and Center Grove Little League baseball and served as a Center Grove Bantam Football board member.

Phyllis also is survived by her sons, Drew Northern and wife, Stephaniel, and Seth Northern and wife, Ali, both of Martinsville, and Kirk Northern and wife, Kristen, of Greenwood; grandchildren, Hannah, Hayden, Madison, Keegan, Emilee, Seth, Paige, Cameron and Brett; a brother, Eddy Swank and wife, Connie, of Franklin, Ohio; and a sister, Judy Bridges and husband, Jim, of Middletown, Ohio.

She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph N. Northern, whom she married on Dec. 26, 1965. He passed away on Aug. 4, 2012. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Marlene Morrison.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church, 3150 E. Myra Lane, Martinsville, with the Revs. Mark Suter and Becky Suter officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time today at the church. Burial will be at Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery in Martinsville.
