Crystal “Sylvia” (Gossling) Cates, 79, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at her home in Morgantown.
Sylvia was born in Indianapolis on July 9, 1934, to the late Walter and Crystal (Rook) Gossling.
Sylvia’s true passion in life was being a registered nurse and being able to help others in need. She retired in 2005 as an RN after 50 years of service, working at Morgan County Hospital and Johnson Memorial Hospital.
She was a 1950 graduate of Morgantown High School and went on to earn her nursing degree from St. Vincent School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1952.
Sylvia married Arthur Curtis Cates Sr. on Nov. 12, 1976, in Springfield, Tenn. He preceded her in death on June 25, 2004, after 27 loving years of marriage.
Sylvia enjoyed the outdoors by working in her flower gardens and walking with her dog Reggie. She loved all animals and enjoyed reading.
She is survived by a niece, Kyle (Steven) DeWeese of Avon; and two stepchildren, Susan Frye of Takoma, Wash., and Arthur C. Cates Jr. of Maple Falls, Wash.
Sylvia also was preceded in death by a sister, Veva Snelling.
The Rev. Mark Boardman will conduct a funeral service at 1 p.m. Thursday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home, Cremation and Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mount Zion Cemetery in Morgantown.
Memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Sylvia to the Morgan County Humane Society, 690 W. Mitchell Ave., Martinsville, IN 46151.
