Shirley Ann Watkins
Shirley Ann (Perry) Watkins, 74, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. She was a longtime resident of Greenwood.
She was born Oct. 27, 1938, in Franklin, Ky., to George Whitney Perry and Clara Ann (Shores) Perry Halloran.
She married Castle “Bud” Watkins on April 23, 1953; and he preceded her in death on June 21, 1987.
Survivors include a nephew, Bob (Barbara) Watkins, and their daughters, Sabrina and Pamela; aunts, Alma Perry and Mae Willingham; cousins, Willie (Helen) Shores, Betty Jo Boyer, Jo Perry, Nancy Perry and Reed Perry; a stepsister, Margaret McDaniel; special nephew, Richard (Jeanie) Watkins; and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bud.
Shirley attended Indianapolis Public Schools School 21 in Indianapolis and Howe High School.
She was the switchboard operator at Franklin College for a quarter-century. With her Southern accent, she was known as the “Voice of Franklin College.” During her time there, she was a friend and mentor to many students. Once MS took the use of her legs, she moved to the Franklin United Methodist Home, where she was a favorite of nurses and aides due to her sunny disposition and sharp wit.
Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her longtime friends A.J. and Carol Henderson of Moody, Ala., and her dear friends and caregivers, Anita and Steven Osborn.
A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Franklin College Chapel, Monroe and Forsythe streets. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the service time Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
