Obituary: Carol Ann Churchman Bales, Greenwood

Carol Ann Churchman Bales, of Greenwood, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.

She was born in Indianapolis on July 31, 1938.

She was the oldest daughter of F. L. and Eleanor M. Churchman. She was the great-granddaughter of F.M. Churchman, an early Indianapolis banker. She grew up at Hillside, at the Churchman estate.

She was a 1960 Purdue University graduate with a bachelor of science degree in education. She taught third and fourth grades at Beech Grove Central Elementary School, where her father-in-law was the superintendent.

Carol was a member of Delta Gamma, Tri-Kappa, PEO and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Association South Group. She had a long tenure in 4-H programs with a wide range of involvement, in addition to being a Girl Scout leader.

She was a board member of the Marion County Fair prior to moving to Johnson County.

Mrs. Bales enjoyed playing bridge, travel, her grandchildren and winters at Pompano Beach, Fla. Carol was an avid reader and excellent pianist with a keen interest in Churchman family history.

While in Florida, she was a member of the Pompano Beach Garden Club. Her condo friends will miss her at the pool!

Carol is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Jimmie F. Bales; three daughters, Jamie S. (Don) Just of Andover, Kan., Julie K. DelaCuesta of Fort Wayne and Jodie L. (Dr. Steven) Bales of rural Bluffton; and grandchildren, Amanda, Michael and Evan Just, Courtney and Drew DelaCuesta and Brent, Kristen and Lauren Bales.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 7602 Madison Ave., Indianapolis, and one hour prior to the service Friday at Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ, at North and New Jersey streets, in Indianapolis. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
